Nyachae’s time for retirement from politics is misinterpreted. It was at the backdrop of explaining his absence from the constituency at Keumbu leaders meeting that he begged his future political leadership on his medical advisers. Thus he said, “I have to wait for their verdict come September”.
It should be noted that in the last Ford People National delegates conference that was held at Nairobi – Nyachae was re-elected for the chairmanship of the party- which he demystified at the same meeting that he will continue to lead.
Other leaders should emulate Nyachae’s courage to share their conditions that are affecting the expectations of electorates to be met.
It is amicable for the incumbent leaders to open democratic dialogue for the people to search a successor. By encouraging the constituents to be thinking of future leadership when time comes. That is healthy and welcome. “Think of a possible successor who is capable of steering the constituency ahead”, Nyachae said amid the nosterigia of his prowess at National athletics to chief secretary achievement.
Political analysist aren’t wrong to project the future of Nyachae from the past history – where Nyaribari (Chache) has come to be termed a three term constituency – since independe. James Nyamweya and Andrew Omanga held the reins of parliamentary membership for three terms each. Yes, this is the third term for Nyachae. This doesn’t mean his time has come to quit.
Leaders should be examined against their ability to meet the dynamic needs of a give people. Neither age nor education is the sole determination of a leader.
Nyachae has spear headed the establishment of a dispensary at each sub-location-he complements the ministry of health with the supply of medication. His parliamentary salary too supplements Government bursary for needy secondary students.
Being a youth doesn’t make leaders as it’s preached across the board. Old age too can not be banked upon. History is a witness of youths and elderly men and women who have concurred either to achieve genius leadership.
Tom Mboya within the span of 39 years achieved what most of our leaders granted the years of Methuselah can never achieve with their mindset of self seeking.
Nelson Mandela stands tall as a statesman who age never robbed the charisma and the heart of his people of South Africa . He took the leadership with praise and left in grace.
Age is a wanting factor to solely base our debate on leadership. Ability coupled with strength to meet the role(s) of a particular position: should be argued. Caleb of the Bible was 80 years old when he took the challenge to claim his rightful possession of land allotment from Israel ’s enemies – young people dared not.
We are witnessing people’s lives falling apart from leaders taking the reins with a sole ambition of leadership devoid of a vision, a deep analysis of the needs of the people and a well oriented capacity to meet them.
The aftermath: the subjects (voters) are left, cynical, short – changed and cheated. Voting becomes like a genius- love- poem that is never experienced or lived.
From these desperate and helpless voters become subjects of manipulation. Take this case: Kenyans outgrew Moi’s 24 yrs of leadership, for two terms, between 1992 and 2002, he was a president of the minority – 40 per cent. When 2002 dawned KANU became the sole enemy of Kenyans. Kenyans seemed to have forgotten about examining leadership qualities (to take over from Moi) – Narc was sired. The people voted upon the MOU promises; but where is Narc now?
Leadership for the sake of leadership is a syndrome running within our leaders. And it seems to induce change for the sake of change syndrome amongst the People. And an imaginary common enemy who might be age or a certain tribe. While forgetting to judge men and women as per their character content against the duties of a particular office.
Back to Nyachae’s analysts; the past is not a prophet into the future. As much as it cannot be wished away. History itself is a dilemma as the horn is dilemma to the rhino.
When it comes to future leadership it’s the people to decide. The incumbent and aspiring politicians are mere players – the voters are the final referee. Nyachae’s retirement is between him and the people he represents.
