The first national technology fair and conference for technical education will be held between 17 to 20 May 2011.
The Director of Technical Education, Mr Owate Wambayi says the event will provide an opportunity for technical, industrial, vocational and entrepreneurship training (TIVET) institutions to to display their innovations and inventions in the fields of science and technology as well as market themselves.
Additionally, Wambayi says the Robot contest will held during the fair - creating a forum for Kenyan young engineers to show case their creativity, share information and promote engineering in automation.
The Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology, Prof Hellen Sambili says the TIVET sector plays a very important role in the nurturing of technical human resources for both the informal and formal sectors of the economy.
“We therefore have a major role to play in the production of skilled artisans, craftsmen, technicians and technologist for the achievement of vision 2030,” Sambili says.
The ministry through the directorate of technical education is directly responsible for 40 public technical training institutions, offering over 100 career programs that include among others technical diplomas, technical certificates, and apprenticeship programs.
The ministry's permanent secretary, Prof Crispus Kiamba says the theme of the fair “Science and Technology for Enhancing Wealth Creation” articulates the crucial role of science and technology and innovation in the development of the society.
“Kenya is determined to pursue strategies to strengthen and improve the use of science, technology and engineering in its national production systems,” Kiamba says. “TIVET is science oriented and technology based providing opportunities for acquisition of the requisite human resource skills required for technological and industrial transformation.”
